Every twenty turns, drop the tension and check for loops forming; if they appear, flip the filler spool over and carry on. Fill to just below the spool lip. Underfilling costs casting distance, overfilling throws loose coils on the first cast. With braid, add monofilament backing first so the braid cannot spin on the arbor under load.

Setting the drag correctly

Thread the line through the guides, hook it to something solid, lift the rod to a fighting angle and adjust until line leaves the spool under steady pressure.
