Description
A hand winch earns its place the first time something heavy refuses to move. A boat that will not come the last three feet onto the trailer. An ATV with a dead battery at the end of a forest road. A log that has to come up a ramp and into the bed. These are the moments when engine power is either unavailable or exactly the wrong tool, and a crank in your hand is the thing that finishes the job.
Pulling power that never needs a battery
An electric winch stops being useful the moment its battery is flat, and that is often the same moment you need it most. A manual winch has no such dependency. There is nothing to charge, nothing to wire, and nothing that fails quietly in a cold garage over the winter. You mount it, you turn the handle, and the load moves.
The two-way ratchet is what makes it controllable rather than merely strong. It lets you haul in one direction and pay the cable out under load in the other, so a boat coming off a trailer descends at the speed you choose instead of the speed gravity chooses. Anyone who has watched a load run away from a free-spooling drum understands why that matters.
Features
- Two-way ratchet — haul in and release under load with the same handle, keeping control in both directions.
- 33 ft of steel wire cable — enough reach to work from where you are standing rather than where the winch is bolted.
- Two capacities — 800 lbs for light trailers, small boats and utility work; 3500 lbs for heavier hauling.
- Manual operation — no battery, no wiring, no charging, nothing to go flat between uses.
- Ships from the United States — days, not weeks, and no customs paperwork.

Which capacity to choose
Pick the hand winch by the heaviest thing you expect to pull, not by the average. The 800 lbs version suits small utility trailers, jon boats, kayaks and dragging gear up a ramp. The 3500 lbs version is the one to take if you are recovering a loaded trailer, a larger boat, or anything where you would rather have capacity in reserve than discover the limit under load.
A winch used near its rating works harder, wears faster and gives you no margin on a bad day. Buying one size up is the cheaper decision over time.
Where it fits
On a boat trailer, this is the piece that closes the last few feet of a launch and recovery. On an ATV or utility trailer, it drags equipment aboard that two people would otherwise lift badly. In a workshop or on a property, it is a fixed pulling point for anything that has to move in a straight line under control. If you tow regularly, the US Coast Guard boating safety resources are worth reading on load handling and trailer practice before you launch.
It also earns its keep as the backup to an electric winch rather than a replacement for one. Two ways to pull is not redundancy you regret.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the cable and drum after use in salt water and let them dry before storing. Keep the cable wound evenly on the drum; a cable that piles on one side binds and wears. Inspect the full length for kinks, flat spots and broken strands before each heavy pull, and retire a cable that shows any of them. A light oil on the ratchet mechanism once a season keeps the pawl moving cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Does the hand winch come with a mounting plate?
It is supplied as the winch with its steel cable. Mounting hardware depends on your trailer or bracket, so check what your setup already has.
Can I use it to lift?
No. This is a pulling winch for horizontal and inclined loads. Lifting overhead requires equipment rated and certified for that purpose.
How fast does it ship?
It ships from a warehouse in the United States, so delivery is measured in days rather than the weeks a direct import takes.
Which one should I buy if I am unsure?
The 3500 lbs version. The extra capacity costs little and removes the question entirely. You can see the rest of our recovery and vehicle gear in Overland Gear or browse the full shop.

Received in perfect condition and very quickly as always, works perfectly. Thank you 🙏
an absolutely excellent item complete with cable and safety ratchet hook that works in both directions
Excellent winch, top quality workmanship, very heavy, you can feel the quality of the workmanship. very fast delivery, about 10 days. highly recommended, i’m just ordering another piece.
This is a very compact, sturdy, and well-made hand winch with a galvanized steel cable that leaves no room for complaints except for one thing: it lacks a nameplate indicating the load capacity and manufacturer information. However, I haven’t installed it yet, so if any changes are needed, I will provide that later.
I just received it, but the small anti-snag clip was bent upon arrival. I had to gently straighten it out; it’s impossible to add an image because I’ve already straightened it.
