Description

A camping axe earns its keep on the third night, not the first. The dry wood by the fire ring is gone, the kindling has to come out of a damp log, and that is when you find out whether the tool in your pack actually bites. This one is a single piece of full tang stainless steel — 27 cm from butt to edge, with a 13.2 cm cutting blade hardened to 58 HRC and a sawback spine along the top for notching and stripping bark. At 320 g it rides in a daypack without complaint, and it ships with a nylon sheath that has its own belt loop.

On a camping axe, the short handle is the point

Twelve centimetres of handle looks stingy next to a felling axe, and that is exactly why this one works where a felling axe does not. You choke up on it and it becomes a knife for feathering sticks. Hold it at the end and the 4.5 mm head carries enough mass to split wrist-thick rounds. A long handle needs room to swing; a short one works kneeling, inside a tent vestibule, or over a log you are steadying with your free hand. For a camping axe that mostly makes kindling rather than felling trees, short wins.

Features

  • Full tang construction. Head and tang are one continuous piece of stainless steel. There is no joint at the neck, which is where two-piece hatchets fail first.
  • 58 HRC cutting edge. Hard enough to hold an edge through a night of kindling, soft enough to bring back with a pocket stone instead of a workshop.
  • Sawback spine. The toothed top edge notches branches and strips bark without putting your cutting edge into dirt.
  • Skeletonised head. The cut-outs take weight out of the blade body while leaving the 4.5 mm spine intact, so the balance sits forward of your hand where it does the work.
  • Non-slip cord wrap. The steel handle is wrapped in tight nylon cord and finished with a wrist lanyard, so a wet grip does not become a loose grip.
  • Nylon sheath included. Covers the edge and carries a belt loop, so the camping axe travels on the outside of the pack instead of eating space inside it.

Is this the right size camping axe for you

Match the camping axe to the job. If your firewood arrives split and you only need to make kindling and shave tinder, this size is right and anything bigger is dead weight. If you are clearing standing timber or splitting rounds thicker than your forearm, you want a full-length axe and this is not a substitute. The honest test is your pack: at 320 g and 27 cm, this one goes on every trip. A 1.5 kg hatchet gets left in the garage after the second time you carry it and do not use it.

Where it fits

Car camping, backpacking, overland kits, hunting camps and truck boxes. This camping axe handles kindling, tent stakes, bark, cordage and the small cutting jobs that otherwise ruin a good knife. Wherever you use it, keep to local rules on gathering and processing wood — the Leave No Trace principles published by the National Park Service cover what you can and cannot cut on public land, and they change from one forest to the next. Browse the rest of our camping gear or the full shop to round out the kit.

Care and maintenance

Wipe the camping axe dry before it goes back in the sheath. Stainless resists rust, it does not ignore it, and a damp nylon sheath is the one place a blade will spot. Touch up the edge with a fine stone using light passes at the original bevel angle rather than grinding a new one. Check the cord wrap every few trips and re-tension it if it has loosened. Store it out of the sheath for long periods so nothing stays trapped against the steel.

Frequently asked questions

Is the blade one piece with the handle?
Yes. It is full tang, so the steel runs from the cutting edge through to the butt as a single piece. The cord is wrapped around that steel core, not around a separate handle.

How sharp does it arrive?
It arrives with a working edge that cuts. Like most production edges it improves noticeably after a few minutes with a fine stone.

Can I split logs with this camping axe?
It splits kindling and small rounds well. For anything thicker than your forearm you want a longer axe with more head mass.

What is the toothed edge on the top for?
Notching branches, scoring bark and rough sawing. It keeps that work off your main cutting edge.

Does it come with a sheath?
Yes, a nylon sheath with a belt loop is included.

Where does it ship from?
From our warehouse in the United States. Shipping is free on every order.
