Description
This baitcasting reel runs an 8.1:1 gear ratio, which means it picks up about 30 inches of line with every turn of the handle. That is the difference between setting the hook and watching a fish spit the lure while you are still reeling in slack. This LINNHUE Basser baitcasting reel is built for people who fish fast moving lures and need the line tight the moment something hits.
A fast reel is really about the second between the strike and the hookset
Most fish are lost in that one second. With a slower reel you are still catching up to your own line. With 8.1:1 on this baitcasting reel the slack is gone almost as soon as you start turning, and the 12 plus 1 ball bearings keep the handle smooth while you do it. The drag goes up to 17.6 pounds, which is more than enough for bass, pike, walleye and inshore saltwater species.
Features
- 8.1:1 high speed gear ratio. Fast line pickup for jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, frogs and any lure you work back quickly.
- 12 plus 1 ball bearings. Smooth under load, with no grinding when a fish pulls hard.
- 17.6 pounds of max drag. Star drag you can set by feel while the fish is running.
- Magnetic brake with 24 settings. Turn it up when you are learning or casting into wind, turn it down for distance.
- SiC ceramic line guide. A hard, slick ring that is kind to braided line and does not groove.
- CNC machined spool. 0.71 inch inner diameter and 1.30 inch outer, so light lures still start the spool turning.
- Weighs 7.8 ounces. Light enough to fish all day without your wrist complaining.
- Freshwater and saltwater. One reel for the lake and for the beach.

Read this before you order: left hand retrieve
This baitcasting reel is the left hand version, which means the handle is on the left side. If you cast with your right hand, this is the one you want: you keep the rod in your right hand and reel with your left, with no swapping between the cast and the retrieve. If you cast with your left hand and reel with your right, this reel is not for you. We only list what we actually have, and right now we have the left hand version.
Where this baitcasting reel fits
Pair this baitcasting reel with a medium or medium heavy casting rod and you have a setup for bass on a lake, pike in a river, or inshore work from a beach or a boat. It handles braid, fluorocarbon and monofilament. If you plan to put fish back in the water, the NOAA guide on catch and release best practices is short and worth reading. You can see the rest of our gear in Fishing or browse the full shop.
Setting the brake on your baitcasting reel the first time
Start with the magnetic brake near the high end and the spool tension snug. Hold the rod at about ten o’clock, press the thumb bar and let the lure drop. It should fall slowly and stop without the spool spinning on after it lands. If line keeps coming off, tighten. Once you are casting cleanly, lower the brake one setting at a time. Every setting you remove adds distance and adds the chance of a backlash, so move slowly.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the baitcasting reel with fresh water after every trip in salt water, then dry it with a cloth and let it finish drying in the open air. Do not spray it with a hose at pressure, because water forced past the seals is what kills bearings. Back the drag off before you store it so the washers do not stay compressed. A drop of reel oil on the handle knobs and the level wind every few trips keeps it turning the way it did on day one.
Frequently asked questions
Is this baitcasting reel left hand or right hand?
Left hand. The handle is on the left side, for anglers who cast with the right hand.
How much line does it hold?
230 yards of 0.26 mm line, 197 yards of 0.28 mm, or 153 yards of 0.30 mm.
Can I use it in salt water?
Yes. Rinse it with fresh water after each saltwater trip, as described above.
Is it good for a beginner?
The 24 setting magnetic brake is what makes it manageable. Set it high while you learn and lower it as your thumb gets used to the spool.
