Description

The Night Cat camping tarp is the piece of gear that turns a wet weekend into a good one. At 12 x 10 feet it covers a two-person tent, a hammock with room for gear underneath, or a picnic table with the whole family around it. It carries a waterproof rating of 2000 to 3000 mm, and it comes with six aluminum stakes, six adjustable ropes and a carry bag.

One tarp, a dozen ways to stay dry

Pitch it as an A-frame over a hammock, stretch it flat over the kitchen area, run one edge down to the ground as a windbreak, or tie it off the side of a camper or SUV for shade. Because a tarp has no fixed shape, the same sheet adapts to the trees, the wind and the ground you actually find at camp, which is why experienced campers pack one even when they bring a tent.

Features

  • 12 x 10 ft coverage. Enough to shelter a tent, a hammock or a table for four.
  • Waterproof fabric. Rated at 2000 to 3000 mm, with water beading on the surface in the supplier’s rain tests.
  • Reinforced tie points. Stitched patches and metal grommets where the ropes pull.
  • Adjustable ropes. Six nylon lines with tensioners to tighten the pitch without re-tying knots.
  • Stakes and bag included. Six aluminum stakes, an accessory pouch and a carry bag.

Where this camping tarp fits

Hammock camping, family campsites, beach days, tailgates and fishing trips where you need shade in the morning and cover from an afternoon storm. Tie it between two trees for a ridge line, or pair it with trekking poles or telescoping tarp poles for open ground, as poles are not included. Pitch it low on the windy side so rain runs off, and keep a slight angle on flat pitches so water does not pool in the middle. Before your trip, check the National Weather Service forecast so you know which way the weather will come from.

It pairs well with our Night Cat lay flat hammock and the rest of our camping gear.

Three pitches worth learning

A-frame: run a rope between two trees, drape the camping tarp over it and stake both long edges low. This is the classic hammock and rain setup. Flat roof: tie all four corners high for shade over a table, keeping one side lower so rain runs off. Lean-to: stake one long edge to the ground on the windward side and lift the other with trees or poles, which gives you a windbreak with an open front for a campfire view.

Care and storage

Shake the camping tarp and let it dry fully before long-term storage to prevent mildew. Clean it with a sponge, cool water and mild soap; no washing machine and no bleach. Loosen the ropes before packing so the tie points are not under tension, and keep the stakes in their pouch so they cannot puncture the fabric.
