Solar Power Station with Panel

Description

The portable solar power station is a small off-grid lighting kit: a rechargeable base unit, a separate solar panel on a cable, and three hanging LED bulbs. It charges from the panel or from mains power, and it runs lights, a radio and a phone from the same box.

A portable solar power station lights three places at once

A lantern lights the spot you are standing in. This lights a whole site, because the three bulbs hang on their own leads — one in the tent, one over the table, one at the door — while the base unit stays where the cable reaches. That is the difference between camping around a light and having the place lit.

Features

• Two ways to charge — the included solar panel or a mains supply, so the unit refills whether or not there is power.
• Three hanging LED bulbs — separate leads, so the light goes where it is needed instead of all in one place.
• Built-in flashlight and light panel — a beam for walking and a flood for working close up.
• FM radio, MP3 and MMC playback — forecasts, or something to listen to while cooking.
• Multi-port USB charging cable — phones, a USB fan, a shaver, anything small.
• Remote control included — track, volume, EQ and power without getting up.
• Mains adapter included — charge it indoors the night before you leave.
• Carry handle — 4.11 lb, moved with one hand.

How to get the most out of a portable solar power station

Put the panel where it sees sky for most of the day rather than where it is convenient, and move it once at midday if the site is shaded. Charge from mains before a trip so you leave full and let the panel hold the level rather than build it. Run the bulbs at the lowest setting that lets you see; lighting is what drains a small battery, and three bulbs on full is a much shorter evening than three bulbs on low.

Where a portable solar power station fits

Base camp, a garden shed or workshop with no wiring, a cabin, a boat, a market stall, and the cupboard you open when the power goes out at home. It is built for lighting and small USB charging rather than for running tools or appliances, so match the expectation to that.

Caring for your portable solar power station

Wipe the panel clean — dust costs real output. Store the unit charged rather than flat, and give it a full charge every few months if it sits unused. Coil the bulb leads loosely instead of pulling them tight around the case, since the weak point on any kit like this is where the cable enters the fitting.
