Beach Cart with Balloon Wheels

Description

This beach cart is built for the part of the trip that usually hurts: dragging a cooler, rods, chairs and an umbrella across soft sand. Its 12-inch balloon wheels spread the weight over a wide, soft footprint, so the cart rolls on top of the sand where narrow plastic wheels sink. The aluminum frame carries up to 165 pounds on a 29.9 x 15.4 inch deck, and the handle adjusts from 33.1 to 49.8 inches.

Wide soft wheels are the whole point

A standard hand truck or wagon works on pavement and stops on the beach. Balloon wheels run at low pressure, so the tire flattens slightly under load and floats instead of cutting a rut. An inflation pump with a needle adapter comes in the box, along with a valve card that shows the correct size: inflate to 12 inches and no more, because over-inflating can damage the wheel.

Where this beach cart fits

Surf fishing trips where you carry rods, a sand spike, bait and a cooler down to the water; family beach days with chairs, umbrella and toys; and lake shores, campsites and boat ramps where the ground is loose. Keep the load low and centered over the axle, strap tall items to the handle frame, and let a little air out on very soft sand for even more float. Before heading out, check the fishing license rules for the state you will fish in.

Assembling the cart

The beach cart arrives flat. Attach the handle frame to the base, slide the axle through, mount the two wheels and secure them with the cotter pins; the wrenches and screwdriver you need are in the box. Inflate each wheel with the included pump, checking the diameter against the valve card, then hang the mesh bag on the frame. Assembly takes a few minutes the first time, and after that the cart only needs to be unfolded.

Care and storage

Rinse the frame and wheels with fresh water after every beach day to remove salt, and dry the cart before folding it. Check tire pressure before each trip with the included pump, and do not leave the inflated wheels in a hot car trunk for long periods. Store the beach cart folded in a dry place.
