Description

The spinning reel in the HE series covers sizes from 1000 up to 7000, so the same reel family works for light trout gear and for heavier surf setups. A 5.2:1 gear ratio and an interchangeable handle mean it adapts to how you fish rather than the other way round.

Choosing the right size of spinning reel

Reel size is the decision most anglers get wrong. A 1000 or 2000 balances a light rod for trout and perch. A 3000 or 4000 is the general purpose choice for bass, pike and light sea fishing. From 5000 upward you are into surf, carp and heavier saltwater work where line capacity matters more than weight. Matching the reel to the rod is what makes a setup feel right in the hand. An oversized reel makes a light rod feel tip-heavy and tiring across a long session.

Spinning reel size comparison across the HE series

Who it is for

Anglers building a first serious setup, or anyone who wants a spare reel that will not let them down halfway through a session. The size range makes it easy to buy two: a small one for lures and a larger one for bait or distance work. Browse the rest of our Fishing gear, or see the full MAXELTI Active catalog.

Care and maintenance

Rinse with fresh water after saltwater use and dry before storing. Slacken the drag between sessions so the washers keep their shape. A drop of oil on the handle knob and line roller each season is enough; heavier greasing attracts grit and makes things worse rather than better.

Spooling line without twist

Line twist causes more lost fish than any component failure. Lay the filler spool flat on the floor with the label facing up, keep light tension with a cloth, and wind slowly. Every twenty turns, drop the tension and check for loops forming; if they appear, flip the filler spool over and carry on. Fill to just below the spool lip. Underfilling costs casting distance, overfilling throws loose coils on the first cast. With braid, add monofilament backing first so the braid cannot spin on the arbor under load.

Setting the drag correctly

Most anglers run the drag far too tight. The working rule is a quarter to a third of your line’s breaking strain, and you set it with the rod bent rather than with the reel in your hand. Thread the line through the guides, hook it to something solid, lift the rod to a fighting angle and adjust until line leaves the spool under steady pressure. That is the only way the setting reflects what happens with a fish on the end.

Frequently asked questions

Which size spinning reel should I choose?
1000 to 2000 for trout and perch, 3000 to 4000 for bass and pike, 5000 and above for surf, carp and heavier saltwater.

Can I switch the handle to the other side?
Yes, the handle is interchangeable and swaps between left and right without tools.

Do I need a fishing licence?
In nearly every US state, yes, and it is issued at state level. The US Fish and Wildlife Service licence directory points you to the right agency.

Does it come with line?
No. The reel ships empty so you can match the line class to your fishing.

Is it suitable for saltwater?
For light saltwater use, yes, provided you rinse it with fresh water after every session.

The reel has rear play. But for this price, I didn't give 1 star. The price is appropriate for such a reel. So 3 stars are sufficient.
