Check your rails before anything else

Cross bars only work if they match the rails already on your roof. These are made for raised side rails, the kind that run front to back with a gap underneath, and the distance between the inner edges of the two rails must be between 40.8 and 43.1 inches. They do not fit a bare roof, flush rails or factory fixed points. Measure across the inside of your rails before you order: two minutes with a tape measure avoids a return.

Center the load between the bars, keep heavy items low and flat, and never exceed the lower of two limits: the 198 lb rating of the bars or the roof load listed in your vehicle manual. Installing the bars

Loosen the feet, place one bar toward the front of the rails and the other far enough back to support your load, following the spacing in your vehicle manual, and adjust the feet until they seat evenly on both rails. Tighten each foot with the Allen key a little at a time, alternating sides so the bar sits straight, then close the covers and lock them. Push firmly on each bar before loading: nothing should shift or rotate. Your roof rack cross bars are ready for the first load.

Care and storage

Wash the bars with the car and rinse off road salt in winter. Check the feet and locks every few weeks, and remove the bars when you will not use them for a long time: they reduce fuel economy slightly and add wind noise. Keep the keys in a safe place and write down the key number if there is one.
